The dominant way of conceiving language has always been to picture a speaker from the neck up, formulating a thought and retrieving from his brain the linguistic resources for representing-expressing-communicating it. Hearers occupy a secondary, passive position, as does the rest of the body besides the brain; indeed it frequently gets forgotten that the brain is part of the body.....
